Alperen Eken completed his Political Science and International Relations degree at Boğaziçi University. During his studies, he wrote numerous articles for Dinamik Newspaper and Boğaziçi Magazine for two years. He completed a long term internship at the American Chamber of Commerce in Turkey, during which he prepared several surveys and reports about the business environment in Turkey. He was one of the organizing members of the panels “Roadmap of Entrepreneurship in Turkey” and “IPR and Investment Environment in Turkey.” He completed a one-year internship at the Public Affairs and Government Affairs at the Dow Chemical Company, and he worked six months as a Compliance Intern at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Since March 2017, he has been working as a Compliance Analyst. He has been in the Co-Opinion Team since June 2015.He speaks Turkish, English and German.
Özge Kaya (Vice-Chair)
Özge Kaya is pursuing a double-major program with Political Science & International Relations and History at Boğaziçi University. She participated a community development project in Karachi, Pakistan as part of the AIESEC Global Volunteer Program concentrated on women rights. In 2015, she completed her internship in the International Investors’ Association (YASED) in Istanbul. She was an active member of the Center for European Studies Student Forum (CESSF) at Boğaziçi University and part of field research conducted by the organization in Bursa and Yerevan respectively for working on local governments and migration/Syrian refugees. Taking the responsibility as the editor of CESSF Newsletter in 2016 she contacted with Co-Opinion for the first time. She speaks English.
Arda Helvacılar (Secretary-General)
Arda Helvacilar is a junior student at Istanbul University School of Law. He graduated from Kabataş Erkek Lisesi in 2015. He is currently the president of Istanbul University’s MUN Club, and he is on the board of directors of Istanbul University Entrepreneurs Community (ISTEC). In his first year at university, he organized “Istanbul University Model United Nations Conference 2015” and he currently leads an international project named “igk |global” between the Netherlands, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. He has been an active member of TEMA and LÖSEV. He speaks English and German.
Can Baran Beder (Director, Department of Private Sector Relations)
Can is a sophomore at Istanbul University Law Faculty, being one of the youngest members of the Co-Opinion team. He studied in Istanbul, Baku, Eskisehir and in Ankara during his high school years. He participated in MUN conferences between 2012 and 2016. He also served as the director of the International Law Students’ Association Istanbul’s European Union Commission in 2015-2016. He speaks English and Portuguese.
Ekin Akmanoğlu (Director, Department of Fundraising)
Ekin Akmanoğlu completed her Bachelor Degree in Law at Kultur University, Istanbul. She spent one summer as a Legal Intern at Dpointgroup, Barcelona, Spain as part of Erasmus+ exchange program. She also attended two committee sessions: UN Committee on Civil and Political Rights and UN Committee on Economic and Social Rights in Geneva as an ELSA International Delegate. She also serves as the Director of Marketing at ELSA Istanbul. For one year, she was also the university representative of ELSA Istanbul to the Kultur University. She was also the founding president of the University Model United Nations Association where she attended conferences internationally. She speaks English and Spanish
Betül Soysal (Director, Department of Communications)
Betül Soysal is pursuing her double major program with Political Science & International Relations in French & Law at Yeditepe University, Istanbul. Also, she is pursuing a minor, major program in Sociology. She spent one summer as an ambassador of Sustainable Development Goals in Baltic Countries with AIESEC internship. She served as a vice-president in International Relations Students’ Club of Yeditepe University for two years. She completed her internship in Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the department of Legal Affairs and also she was a researcher intern in Turkish Industry and Business Association EU-Brussels Representative Office and also in Caspian Strategy Institute. She earned Honorable Mention at Justianus Moot Court United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda as a judge. She also attended more than 40 Model United Nations Conferences as a delegate, chairman, director of the organization such as Galatasaray MUN, MUNIST, ECOMUN, MUNTR, and ROMEMUN. She was elected for International Law education at Center for Strategic Research of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has just become an executive board member of Association of European Studies for the Caucasus which is supported by the European Union. She speaks English and French.
Büşra Mahmutoğlu (Director, Department of Public Relations)
Büşra Mahmutoğlu completed her major program in Political Science & International Relations and her minor program in Film & Media Studies under Western Languages and Literature at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. She spent one semester at North Carolina State University as part of an exchange program. She actively participated in various research projects during her undergraduate program associated with Social Sciences. Büşra currently pursues her MA degree in Political Science program at Sabanci University and serves as research, teaching, and education project assistant in the Faculty of Arts and Social and Sciences at Sabanci University and writes movie reviews. She speaks English, Spanish, and Arabic.
Günay Kayarlar (Director, Department of Academic Affairs)
Günay Kayarlar is a senior student pursuing a double major undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Relations & History in Bogazici University. He has also spent two terms as a research assistant in the Political Science and International Relations department. He ranked in top 100 nationwide out of 1.5 million people in the university entrance exams, for which he was granted an Outstanding Success Scholarship. He spent a semester at the University of Cologne in Fall 2015 as an Erasmus student. He speaks Turkish, English and German.
Bahar Ferahköse (Program Associate, Department of Fundraising)
Bahar Ferahkose graduated from Robert College in 2015. She is currently pursuing her bachelor degree in law at Istanbul University. She participated in many volunteer work both in Turkey and abroad. She completed an internship at Refugee Rights Turkey which is a local NGO that provides legal aid for refugees.She speaks English and French.
Canberk Mersin (Program Consultant, Department of Private Sector Relations)
Canberk Mersin graduated from Boğaziçi University, and he is pursuing his MA at Istanbul Bilgi University in International Political Economy. He spent one semester at Washington College as part of an exchange program. The title of “young scholar” was conferred on him by the Global Relations Forum. He served as the president of the Interact Club of Pamukkale, as well as treasurer in the executive board of Rotaract Club of Istanbul, both sponsored by the Rotary Club. He served as the representative of the National Youth Parliament to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. He worked in different companies including JP Morgan, Chase & Co, Total Oil, Yapi Kredi Asset Management and Yapı Kredi Invest. Currently, he is working as a regional representative at Sadık Grubu, one of the leading commercial fuels companies in Turkey. He speaks English, Russian and German.
Samed Şahin (Program Associate, Department of Academic Affairs)
Samed Şahin completed his undergraduate program in Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. He spent one semester at Universität Salzburg, Austria. As a research assistant, he participated in an ongoing research about a computational analysis of trade agreements. During this semester, he also published an article in the magazine of Austrian Student’s Union. Currently, he works as a research assistant to a professor researching immigration, assimilation and integration phenomena in Mediterranean countries. He speaks English and French.
Şeyma Hacılar (Program Associate, Department of Academic Affairs)
Seyma is a fourth class political science and international relations student at Boğaziçi University. She served in a number of non governmental organizations funding the children in need and involved projects focused on Syrian children in Turkey. She has attended first stage one year program in Science and Art Foundation (BİSAV). She was an intern in Turkey International Relations Studies (TUİÇ) on the topic of Israel Politics. She was an assistant of a professor on Mediterranean Immigration Policies. The main subjects which she is interested with are Ethnic Conflicts, Middle East Politics, Democratisation, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy. She makes ceramics and loves writing and learning. She speaks English and Arabic.
Uğur Özkan (Social Media Coordinator, Department of Public Relations)
Uğur Özkan is a senior student in the Department of History at Boğaziçi University. He has won awards in poetry & prose, written articles for magazines and served as editor in an e-Sports club. He was a member of Urban & Environmental Problems Commission at Istanbul Youth Assembly. He has been an active member of Computer Engineering Club and Gaming Club. He worked at ProSiebenSat.1 Games GmbH and Inno Games GmbH. He volunteered for Greenpeace Mediterranean Turkey, World Wildlife Fund Turkey, TEMA and still manages social media accounts of NGOs. His interests include community management, technology, environment, sustainability, politics, civil rights and social action. He speaks English and French.
Semuhi Sinanoğlu (Founding President)
Semuhi Sinanoğlu pursued his double major program in Political Science & International Relations and Economics at Bogazici University, Istanbul. He spent one semester at Columbia University, NY as part of an exchange program. He completed his MA in International Relations at Koc University, Istanbul with his thesis titled “Varieties of Capitalism in the Middle East & North Africa: A Comparative Perspective”. He also completed an executive education program in leadership at Harvard University Kennedy School with scholarship. For one year, he served as the vice-president of the Association of International Relations Studies for Turkey (IRST) and as a social policy analyst for two years at Development Analytics, a London & Istanbul-based research company. He was also a researcher at Al-Haq, one of the first human rights organizations based in Palestine. He is a young scholar of Global Relations Forum, associate of Al Sharq Youth Forum, fellow of the Ashoka Foundation’s Changemaker Program and Open Society Foundation’s Human Rights & Governance Program. As of August 2017, he is based at McGill University, Canada as a Jeanne Sauvé Foundation fellow. The Turkish Educational Foundation granted him “Outstanding Success Scholarship” in 2009. He has been the editor of several magazines published in Turkey. He speaks English, German, and Arabic.
Burak Çelik (Previous Chairperson)
Burak Çelik completed his undergraduate program at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Law. He participated in several moot court competitions and got a degree at the 37th Telders International Moot Court Competition’s oral rounds while representing Turkey. He also attended numerous conferences as a speaker, including the Turkish/German/Japan Colloquium on Comparative Law. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of International Law Society of Istanbul University. He is now licensed to practice law as an attorney and he is pursuing his MA in Private Law at the Turkish-German University. He speaks English and German fluently.
